The Artwork of Judi Carey
Judi Morgan Carey (1945–2000) was born in Marlin, Texas, and moved to Southern California with her family as a child, attending high school in Whittier before working at a candy store at Knott’s Berry Farm, where she met Philip Carey (who was a cast member of the Bird Cage Theater along with a young Steve Martin). The two married in 1967 and attended Long Beach State College together, where she studied studio art until Philip’s deployment to Vietnam with the U.S. Navy required her to move to Pearl Harbor with their infant daughter Heather in 1968. After the war, the family lived in Long Beach, CA, where she worked at the California Museum of Science & Industry; Binghamton, NY, where she worked as a gallery manager and freelance illustrator and where son Ian was born; and Folsom, CA, where she worked as an arts and nonprofit fundraiser until she passed away in 2000. She was also an avid musician, performing with folk groups and church choirs throughout her life.
